Dane Simpkins reflects on AmeriCorps service at the Hub

Nearly one year ago, Shawnee State alumni Dane Simpkins joined the Hub as an AmeriCorps VISTA thanks to support from the Center on Rural Innovation. Dane graduated from SSU in 2021 with a degree in marketing. But, he thought he needed a bit more professional development before heading into the workforce.

“I was really looking for something for about a year,” he explained. "When this position popped up, I didn’t know much about it. But the more I learned, the more I wanted to become involved.”

As an AmeriCorps VISTA, Dane was tasked with increasing digital skilling initiatives in Portsmouth while also growing capacity at the Hub.

“My favorite part about this year has been how broad the goal was. I knew I needed to help improve digital skilling in the area. But, what did that look like? What would make the most impact? What would grow my own skills? I really got to choose my own direction and it really worked out.”

Dane also helped plan events such as Startup Weekend: Shawnee State. That event brought over 30 SSU students together over the course of a week to work on business ideation, market research, business plan development, and pitch skills.

“I loved working on Startup Weekend,” said Dane. “I love helping to plan and run big events. It is always great to see a bunch of people getting together for a good goal and having a great time.”

As part of his service, Dane is also working on a large scale research project focusing on microcredentialing and certification programs locally.

“I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s setting the groundwork for future outreach efforts. And it’s great to see in our rural community.”

As Dane’s year of service nears completion, the Hub will begin looking for two more AmeriCorp VISTAs to help build capacity and assist with vital entrepreneurial programs.

“If you are lost about what to do post graduation, or even in your career, AmeriCorps is an excellent answer. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door. Not only is it a great addition to your resume, it’s a great experience.”

“I want to thank the Hub for giving me this opportunity. I want to thank Director David Kilroy, and Program Coordinators Derrick Parker and Joshua Lawson for being such good mentors along the way.”

The Kricker Innovation Hub will be bringing on our next AmeriCorps VISTA this July! If you’re interested in serving in this position, email David Kilroy at Dkilroy2@shawnee.edu for more information.
