Ignite Portsmouth Success Story: Edwin and Jennifer Martell
Edwin and Jennifer took home 3rd place at the Ignite Portsmouth 2024 Pitch Competition
From photography enthusiasts to thriving business owners, Edwin and Jennifer Martell's journey through our Ignite Portsmouth program showcases the transformative power of entrepreneurial education.
When Edwin and Jennifer Martell signed up for the Ignite Portsmouth entrepreneurship boot camp, an intensive 8-week program designed to equip local entrepreneurs with essential business skills and connections, they weren't sure what to expect. Eight weeks later, the couple emerged with not only valuable business knowledge but also lasting connections that would help transform their photography business, Elm Street Photography.
Finding Their Unique Voice
"It went by fast, but it was fantastic," Edwin reflects. "We learned so much about different aspects of business that we had never been exposed to before. The program really prepared us for what to expect when you're out there trying to run your own business."
While the Martells entered the program with an idea for a selfie museum, winning third place in the pitch competition, it was their existing photography business that truly flourished thanks to the skills and connections they gained. Their unique photography style, which Edwin describes as "throwing out the rulebook," has gained significant recognition in the Portsmouth area.
"I try to focus so much on the person in a photo. We play with lighting and contrasts, bringing out colors while adding drama and mystery," Edwin explains. "Unlike conventional approaches, we give each picture its own unique edit depending on our mood and what we think looks best. That's what separates us from others."
Building Valuable Connections
One of the most valuable aspects of the program for the Martells was the relationships formed with both fellow participants and mentors. They have maintained strong connections with their cohort members and mentors, including Oak Hill Superintendent Jason Martell, who regularly checks in on their business progress. The couple has also developed a collaborative relationship with Ryan and Audrey Scheisser - owners of Appalachian Media and Marketing, handling their photography needs while receiving guidance on client relations and business development.
"Through the program, our eyes were opened to the power of collaboration and teamwork," Edwin says. "It's no longer about businesses fighting each other. We're seeing more businesses joining together and building each other up."
The Power of Pivoting
The program also taught Edwin and Jennifer the importance of being flexible with business ideas. "One thing the facilitator, Josh, always emphasized was that entrepreneurs need to be willing to challenge their own ideas," Edwin reflects. "You might start thinking you have the best idea ever, but the program helps you realize what needs work and how to pivot when necessary."
Since completing Ignite Portsmouth, the Martells have expanded their services at Elm Street Photography to include drone footage and videography, adapting to market demands while maintaining their distinctive style. Their business continues to grow, with people regularly recognizing their work around town.
Strengthening Their Partnership
Going through the entrepreneurial boot camp together had an unexpected benefit for Edwin and Jennifer. "The Hub has done a fantastic job with this program. Going through it with my wife actually made our relationship stronger," Edwin notes. "There was compromise, and we learned to work together in new ways as both business partners and spouses."
For couples or individuals considering the program, Edwin offers enthusiastic encouragement: "If you're thinking about it, get yourself signed up for the boot camp. It can be nerve-wracking to take that first step, but we're so glad we took that leap. We've learned so much, gained valuable connections, and surrounded ourselves with a network of people who gave us the tools to succeed."
The Martells' story exemplifies the transformative power of the Ignite Portsmouth program, demonstrating how entrepreneurial education combined with community support can help local businesses thrive and grow – while also strengthening personal partnerships along the way.
